Artist Statement

I paint because I believe creation is a blessing.

Everything I have received—my faith, my family, my experiences, my struggles, and even my ability to make art—is something I am deeply grateful for. My work is an expression of that gratitude and a way of sharing it with others. Working primarily in oil, alongside Japanese ink painting and charcoal, I explore questions of identity, belief, memory, and what we inherit from those who came before us. My paintings are often influenced by classical realism, and the dramatic use of light found in Baroque painting, whilst my ink works draw from traditions of simplicity, discipline, and presence.

As a neurodivergent artist, my way of seeing and engaging with the world has been shaped by a heightened awareness of detail, pattern, and connection. I am drawn to moments of quiet significance that can easily be overlooked. Through painting and drawing, I seek to hold attention on these moments, creating spaces for reflection, contemplation, and personal interpretation.

Light plays a central role in my work. For me, it represents grace, revelation, and hope. Darkness is not simply the absence of light, but a place of mystery, uncertainty, and growth. The tension between the two mirrors the human experience of searching for meaning and understanding. Above all, I hope my work encourages people to pause, reflect, and recognise the blessings present in their own lives. If a painting can create a moment of gratitude, wonder, or connection, then it has fulfilled its purpose.

Biography

Genji is a third-culture artist of mixed heritage based in Malaysia. Working primarily in oil, alongside Japanese ink painting and charcoal, she creates figurative works rooted in classical realism and the study of light.

Coming from a background in mathematics, engineering, and finance, Genji represents an unconventional voice in contemporary figurative realism. Entirely self-taught, she developed her practice through years of independent study, driven by a deep commitment to craftsmanship, observation, and continual learning.

Having lived in the United States, France, United Kingdom, Singapore, and Bali, her experiences across cultures have shaped both her perspective and artistic voice. These experiences continue to inform her work, which explores identity, faith, memory, and belonging through the human figure.

Her work has been exhibited across South-East Asia, and in 2026 she was recognised internationally as a recipient of the International Young Artist Award, a global distinction presented by the Ministry of Culture and Arts in Russia. She continues to develop her body of work from her studio in Kuala Lumpur.
