About the Artist
Artist Statement
My paintings examine identity as a structure shaped by faith and inheritance. Working primarily in oil, with occasional charcoal studies, I draw from the visual language of Baroque tenebrism and classical realism to construct spaces where light operates as both revelation and scrutiny.
The work originates in personal memory — fragments of upbringing, ritual, and interior belief systems that continue to inform perception. I am interested in how faith persists beyond doctrine: as posture, restraint, discipline, and silence. Rather than depicting narrative, I stage psychological conditions. The figure becomes a site where inherited tradition and individual agency remain unresolved.
Chiaroscuro functions as a conceptual device rather than a stylistic quotation. Darkness in my work carries density and weight; illumination isolates and exposes. The realism is deliberate — a stabilising structure that allows emotional tension to remain contained, never theatrical.
I seek to create paintings that move the viewer through recognition rather than spectacle. The work invites a sustained encounter with the quiet gravity of belief, memory, and self-examination.
Biography
Genji is an emerging figurative realist painter of mixed heritage and a third-culture artist based in Malaysia. With academic training in mathematics and engineering, she brings a disciplined approach to observation and construction, alongside an attentiveness to structure, proportion, and tonal balance. Her practice reflects an ongoing engagement with faith, memory, and inheritance through the language of classical realism.
Working primarily in oil, and occasionally in charcoal, her practice is rooted in classical realism and tonal construction. Through controlled chiaroscuro and restrained palettes, she investigates the human figure as a bearer of memory, faith, and inheritance. Her work draws from Orthodox and Christian traditions, examining how belief and culture are embodied, transmitted, and sustained across generations.
Autodidact in her early development, she later undertook realist training under a painter in Indonesia. Having previously lived in Paris, France, her experience across cultures continues to inform her understanding of identity not as a fixed category, but as a condition shaped by movement and continuity.
She has exhibited across South-East Asia and continues to develop her practice within contemporary sacred figurative painting.
